Additional information

Mswati III took the throne in 1986 at age eighteen following the death of his father Sobhuza II, who had reigned for 82 years — the longest verified reign of any monarch in recorded history. The second portrait coinage reflects the king's mature image and coincides with a period of significant constitutional tension, as Mswati's absolute rule drew sustained international criticism through the 1990s and 2000s. Swaziland remained one of the last countries in the world to ban political parties outright.
