Additional information

Bulgaria contracted the 1925 coinage — including this issue — to the Poissy mint in France, one of several European states that outsourced production following the disruptions of the First World War. The Poissy facility struck two die varieties distinguished by the presence or absence of a small lightning bolt privy mark, which accounts for the dual Schön references.

Boris III had assumed the throne in 1918 following his father Ferdinand's forced abdication after Bulgaria's defeat. Coinage in his name was therefore a politically charged act of continuity for a kingdom still absorbing the territorial losses of the Treaty of Neuilly.
