Obverse description The first coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria is depicted in the central field, featuring a rampant lion passant on a shield, flanked by two symmetrical sprays of wheat ears tied with a ribbon at the base, and surmounted by a five-pointed star. A scroll at the base of the shield bears the date '9 IX 1944', commemorating the communist takeover of Bulgaria. The Cyrillic legend 'НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА' arcs along the upper periphery, while 'БЪЛГАРИЯ' appears along the lower periphery, separated on each side by a five-pointed star. The design is framed by an inner beaded border.
