| Obverse description | The right side of the field bears a portrait effigy of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza in period dress, accompanied by his name inscribed in a semicircular legend. The left side of the field is arranged vertically from top to bottom with the face value '1 LEU', the national inscription 'ROMANIA', Romania's coat of arms, and the year of issue '2009'. The design commemorates the reign of Prince Cuza, who unified the Romanian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859. |

Issued to mark the centenary of Romanian military aviation, this coin commemorates Aurel Vlaicu, the engineer and pilot who built and flew his own aircraft designs beginning in 1910 — one of the earliest such achievements in Europe. Vlaicu died in 1913 when his self-built Vlaicu II crashed near Băneşti during an attempt to cross the Carpathians.
