Reverse description The large numeral 1 dominates the upper central field in bold relief, with the denomination LEU inscribed immediately below in capital letters. Decorative foliate and wheat-ear motifs frame the composition, with stylized ears of wheat rendered in the lower portion of the field and curvilinear leaf sprays rising symmetrically on either side of the numeral. The design is austere yet elegant, with the denomination rendered clearly against a brushed proof-quality background.

Additional information

In 2004, Romania was mid-process in a monetary reform that would culminate the following year in the redenomination of the leu at a ratio of 10,000 old lei to 1 new leu — one of the largest redenominations in post-communist European history. This pattern was struck as part of the design evaluation process for the new coinage series ahead of that transition. The oversized diameter suggests it was produced for presentation or approval purposes rather than as a genuine production prototype.
