Additional information

Latvia reintroduced the lats in 1993 after reclaiming independence, and the Bank of Latvia developed a reputation for unusually ambitious circulating coinage — the waterlily lats being among the most discussed. The 2008 issue sold out rapidly through the bank's numismatic program, though substantial quantities did enter general circulation.

KM#92 is part of a broader Latvian policy of issuing themed one-lats coins annually, a practice that generated genuine public collecting interest domestically and kept the denomination culturally visible well past the point where most European states had abandoned sub-euro coinage entirely. Latvia adopted the euro in 2014, rendering this series permanently closed.
