The 2004 Lats series commemorating Latvia's four historical regions was issued in the final years before euro adoption effectively ended the lats as a meaningful monetary instrument. The Vidzeme issue — covering the central and northern territory that formed the core of Swedish Livonia before Russian annexation in 1710 — was part of a four-coin program that ran through 2010, each release timed loosely around significant dates in Latvian regional history.
Mintage was tightly controlled, with distribution handled directly through the Bank of Latvia rather than general circulation channels.
