Issued to celebrate Latvia's cultural connection to the Daugava River stones — smooth, palm-sized granite cobbles traditionally given as good-luck tokens — this coin is one of the more literally conceived pieces in modern commemorative minting. The granite centre is sourced from Latvian geological deposits, making each example technically unique in its mineral patterning.
Production presented genuine technical challenges: bonding natural stone to a struck silver ring required adhesive and compression methods outside standard bimetallic tooling. Latvijas Banka issued it at face value, one lats, though the silver alone far exceeded that.
