Sprīdītis is the Latvian equivalent of Tom Thumb — a folkloric boy the size of a thumb, the central figure in a story collected and published by Annā Brigadere in 1903 that became one of the most beloved works in Latvian children's literature. The 2004 issue was part of Latvia's ongoing folklore and cultural heritage coin program, which ran through the lats era before euro adoption in 2014 ended the series.
