The Riga Zoo series, issued by the Bank of Latvia in the final years before the country adopted the euro in 2014, represents one of the last sustained commemorative programs denominated in lats. Latvia's currency had survived Soviet occupation only as a memory — reintroduced in 1993 after independence — and these late collector issues were produced with full awareness that the lats had a fixed expiration date.
KM#129 is one of several zoo-themed pieces in the series, each tied to a specific animal held at Riga Zoo, one of the oldest zoological gardens in the Baltic region, founded in 1912.
