Latvia's 1 lats coin has rotated through a series of annual collector designs since 2001, with the pinecone motif chosen as a nod to the country's extensive forest cover — roughly half the national territory. The pinecone design proved popular enough that the Bank of Latvia revisited the format in later years, an unusual step for a program built on variety.
