Additional information

Koknese was a medieval Livonian stronghold whose ruins sit at the confluence of the Daugava and Perse rivers — a site that became partially submerged after the construction of the Riga Hydroelectric Plant in the 1970s. The Soviet flooding of the valley destroyed or permanently altered dozens of historic Latvian sites, and Koknese became a symbol of that cultural loss. This coin was issued as part of Latvia's ongoing series celebrating places and monuments of national significance, a program the Bank of Latvia has used since the early 1990s to anchor modern Latvian identity in pre-Soviet history.

The Koknese castle foundations are now only fully visible during periods of low water.
