Latvia's national ice hockey program had its breakthrough moment at the 2000 IIHF World Championship in Saint Petersburg, where the team defeated Russia in the preliminary round — a result that sent shockwaves through the hockey world and ignited genuine national pride in a country that had only recently re-established its sovereignty after Soviet occupation. This coin was issued the following year, directly in the wake of that upset.
KM#50 is part of Latvia's broader commemorative silver program from the early 2000s, which the Bank of Latvia used aggressively to build collector interest in Latvian numismatics internationally.
