| Reverse description | A naturalistically rendered hedgehog dominates the central field of the reverse, its spines bearing the numeral 1 as an integral decorative element. The denomination legend LATS is inscribed in a convex arc along the upper left periphery, completing the face value in conjunction with the numeral on the animal's spines. The composition is spare and charming, executed in a style characteristic of Latvian commemorative coinage of the period. |

| Additional information |
Issued by the Bank of Latvia as part of a series celebrating native Latvian fauna, the hedgehog lats became something of a cultural phenomenon — public polling determined the subject, making it one of the few circulating coins whose design was chosen by popular vote. Latvia adopted the euro on 1 January 2014, so this issue had a circulation window of roughly two years before the lats was retired entirely.
