Obverse description The obverse presents a fragmented rendering of the large coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia, with individual heraldic elements dispersed across the field toward the outer edge. Individual letters of the legend LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA are scattered throughout the design, echoing the motif of disruption and displacement. The years 1940-1991, denoting the Soviet occupation period, appear in a semi-arc at the upper right of the field, lending the composition strong historical and symbolic resonance.

Additional information

Issued to mark Latvia's 800th anniversary of recorded history, this coin commemorates the foreign powers — German crusading orders, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Swedish Empire, Russian Empire — that controlled Latvian territory across seven centuries before independence in 1918. The subject is pointed: Latvia spent more of its documented history under foreign administration than not.

KM#87 was struck at the Lithuanian Mint in Vilnius, an arrangement the Bank of Latvia used for several commemorative issues during this period.
