Issued to mark Latvia's independence movements, this coin references the period of armed resistance following the First World War, when Latvian national forces fought simultaneously against both Bolshevik and German Freikorps units between 1918 and 1920. The peace treaty with Soviet Russia, signed in August 1920, formally ended that conflict and secured Latvian sovereignty for the two decades before Soviet occupation.
