The Tự Đức Lang series was struck at a moment when the Nguyễn court was losing its grip on the south — French naval forces seized Gia Định (Saigon) in 1859, and the Three Eastern Provinces fell under French control by 1862. Coins of this weight class functioned as treasury ingots as much as currency, used for tax payments and court transactions rather than everyday commerce.
KM#588 is among the heavier silver issues of the reign, and genuine examples are frequently confused with later restrike material. Die workmanship on authentic period strikes tends to show hand-finishing consistent with Huế mint practice.
