Additional information

Tự Đức reigned during the most turbulent decades of the Nguyễn dynasty, presiding over French military incursions that culminated in the 1862 Treaty of Saigon and the eventual cession of southern Vietnam. Gold lang denominations were never intended for common circulation — they functioned as court currency, used in ceremonial payments, imperial gifts, and treasury reserves. The long reign span attributed to this type reflects die reuse rather than continuous fresh production.

At 37.85 g, this is among the heaviest standard gold issues of the Nguyễn series, and surviving examples in any condition are genuinely scarce on the international market.
