Đồng Khánh was installed by the French in 1885 after they removed his predecessor Hàm Nghi, who had fled to the mountains to lead armed resistance. The lang denominations struck under his name were essentially court currency — ceremonial presentation pieces produced for the imperial household rather than anything approaching general circulation. Surviving examples in any condition are rare; most that exist today passed through French colonial collections before dispersal.
