Tannu Tuva's 1924 currency issue is among the more unusual monetary episodes in Central Asian history. The territory — formally the People's Republic of Tannu Tuva, a Soviet client state nominally independent from 1921 until its quiet absorption into the USSR in 1944 — required its own currency largely as a political formality, to furnish the trappings of statehood. The lan was a unit borrowed from Chinese monetary tradition, reflecting the region's pre-Soviet commercial ties with China rather than any Soviet banking logic.
Pick 1 is the first note of a tiny, short-lived series. The issuing authority had no established central bank in any functional sense.
