The "Birth of the Second Republic" inscription marks a specific political rupture: in December 1972, Kenneth Kaunda signed into law a new constitution making Zambia a one-party state under UNIP, formally ending multiparty democracy. This note was issued to commemorate that transition — an unusual instance of a central bank being directed to print what amounts to a political monument on circulating currency.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement was continuous across most of Zambia's early independence issues, giving the series a consistency of production quality that the country's own economic deterioration through the 1970s would soon make harder to sustain.
