| Additional information |
Part of Turkey's "Anatolian Weights and Measures" series, this issue commemorates the Uyghur Khanate, the Turkic state that dominated the Mongolian steppe from 744 until its collapse under Yenisei Kirghiz pressure in 840 AD. The Uyghur rulers maintained a sophisticated administrative apparatus and were among the first Turkic peoples to adopt a settled, literate court culture, heavily influenced by Sogdian merchants and Manichaean missionaries.
The Manichaean conversion of the Uyghur khagan around 762 AD — following his assistance to the Tang dynasty in suppressing the An Lushan Rebellion — is one of the more consequential religious-political transactions of the medieval steppe world.
