| Reverse description | Within a beaded circle, a waving Ottoman flag is depicted, bearing a crescent moon and an eight-pointed star in its field. Below the flag, the dates '1299 - 1922' denote the span of the Ottoman Empire. The surrounding legend reads 'BÜYÜK TÜRK DEVLETLERİ' (Great Turkish States) at the top and 'OSMANLI İMPARATORLUĞU' (Ottoman Empire) along the lower arc, all in Latin script. |

The modern Turkish kuruş was reintroduced in 2005 following a currency reform that stripped six zeros from the old Turkish lira, collapsing years of catastrophic inflation into a single administrative act. At its worst in 2001, annual inflation had exceeded 68%, and the lira had become so devalued that a single US dollar bought over 1.6 million of them.
By 2015, the 1 kuruş represented one-hundredth of a new lira — a denomination so marginal in purchasing power that its continued production was largely a matter of accounting formality.
