Additional information

This piece belongs to Turkey's 2015 commemorative series honoring historical Turkic states, issued by the Turkish State Mint to trace a political lineage from the Göktürk Khanate of the 6th–8th centuries through to the modern Republic. The Göktürks were the first Turkic polity to use the word "Türk" as a political ethnonym, and their runic script — the Old Turkic alphabet — is among the earliest written records of any Turkic language. The series was a deliberate act of national historiography, extending Turkey's claimed heritage well beyond the Ottoman period.
