The Eastern Imperial Eagle series was introduced by the Turkish State Mint as part of a broader bullion and collector program launched in the mid-2010s, distinct from Turkey's circulating coinage. KM#1402 occupies an unusual commercial space — nominally denominated in kuruş, a unit worth a tiny fraction of the lira, yet produced in nickel silver at a weight and diameter well above any circulating coin.
The kuruş itself was reintroduced in 2005 following Turkey's currency redenomination, which lopped six zeros off the old lira to address decades of accumulated inflation.
