Turkey's postwar kuruş coinage was issued during a period of significant economic strain — the country had remained neutral through World War II but suffered severe inflation and shortages nonetheless, largely due to wartime trade disruptions and the controversial Varlık Vergisi wealth tax of 1942, which had devastated minority merchant communities.
