Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel operated Greenland as a closed trading monopoly under Danish Crown authority, and the colony's internal currency existed entirely outside normal monetary channels — these notes were redeemable only within the colonial trading system, not against Danish kroner in Copenhagen. The 1911 overprint on the 1905 base note reflects a straightforward administrative decision: rather than printing new stock for Holstensborg specifically, existing notes were overprinted to designate which colonial trading post was responsible for redemption.
Survival rates are low. Greenlandic colonial trade notes circulated hard in genuinely remote conditions, and there was little incentive to preserve them once redeemed.
