Struck to commemorate Christian VII's birthday on January 29, 1771, this issue was produced at a moment when the king's mental incapacity was an open secret at court. Real power had already shifted to Johann Friedrich Struensee, the royal physician who had become the queen's lover and, effectively, Denmark's de facto ruler. The celebratory framing of a birthday krone was largely a political performance — Struensee himself signed the cabinet orders that authorized it.
Struensee was arrested the following year and executed. Christian VII reigned in name until 1808.
