Iceland's wartime isolation forced the State Treasury to print its own emergency small change notes domestically — a sharp departure from earlier Icelandic paper money, which had relied on European printers. The German occupation of Denmark in April 1940 cut off normal channels entirely, and Gutenberg Trykkeri in Reykjavík took on the work by necessity, not by design preference.
Jakob Möller served as Minister of Finance from 1939 and his sole signature authorizes this series throughout its run. The Type III brown distinguishes this iteration from the earlier blue and green colour variants issued within the same short window.
