| Obverse lettering | EN CARL XVI GUSTAF SVERIGES KONUNG 2013 (Translation: Carl XVI Gustaf King of Sweden) |
| Reverse description | The reverse features the royal crown at the top center, flanked by the denomination '1 KRONA' to the left and the mint mark 'S' together with the Riksbank Governor's initials 'SI' to the right. Below the crown, the royal monogram of Carl XVI Gustaf divides the commemorative dates '1973' and '2013', marking the 40th anniversary of his reign. Between the monogram and the crown, the king's personal motto 'FOR SVERIGE - I TIDEN' (For Sweden - With the Time) arcs across the field. The outer legend further identifies the king's title and the duration of his reign. |

Issued to mark Carl XVI Gustaf's forty years on the throne — he acceded in September 1973 at age twenty-seven following the death of his grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf — this commemorative krona was struck by the Royal Mint of Sweden (Myntverket) shortly before the facility was privatized and production shifted to Finland. The timing was unremarkable politically, though the reign itself had seen Sweden's monarchy constitutionally stripped of all formal governmental powers under the 1974 Instrument of Government, leaving the king a purely ceremonial head of state.
