Obverse description Central field features the crowned arms of Hanau-Lichtenberg — a quartered shield displaying the characteristic chevron and bar devices of the county — surrounded by intertwining foliate or serpentine ornamental elements. The legend PHILIPVS . C . A . HANAV runs along the outer periphery, identifying Philip V as Count of Hanau, with the date 91 (for 1591) incorporated into the design. The entire composition is enclosed within a beaded inner circle and an outer beaded border. The hammered flan displays characteristic irregularity in shape and strike depth typical of late sixteenth-century German small coinage.

Obverse lettering PHILIPVS . C . A . HANAV 9 1
(Translation: Philip, count of Hanau.)
