Louis X ruled Hesse-Darmstadt as Landgrave through this period, then collected a significant reward for backing Napoleon: in 1806 he was elevated to Grand Duke as Hesse-Darmstadt joined the Confederation of the Rhine. These small billon kreuzers were struck in the final years of the old political order, before the title on the coinage itself had to change.
