The "larger eagle" designation distinguishes this type from the earlier small-eagle Kreuzer that preceded it, a die modification introduced in 1885 without any change to denomination or composition. By this point the Kreuzer itself was already an anachronism — Austria had adopted the Gulden decimal system in 1858, making the Kreuzer worth one-hundredth of a Gulden, and the currency reform of 1892 that introduced the Krone would eliminate it entirely within a few years of this coin's last issue date.
