Reverse description A large ornate cross pattée occupies the center of the reverse, its arms terminating in splayed ends and decorated with small trefoil or pellet ornaments at their extremities, consistent with late Gothic decorative conventions. The angles of the cross are filled with heraldic or floral elements adding visual complexity to the field. The legend MON NOV STI 88 is distributed around the cross, with the date elements flanking the design, denoting the Styrian mint issue of 1488. The inscription MON NOV STI abbreviates Moneta Nova Stiriae, identifying this as a new coinage of Styria. The whole is contained within a beaded border on an irregular hammered flan.

Additional information

Frederick III held the title of Holy Roman Emperor while Styria remained administratively distinct, and coins struck at Graz during this period reflect that uneasy dual authority — issued in his capacity as duke rather than emperor. The 1480s were marked by a debilitating conflict with Matthias Corvinus of Hungary, who actually occupied Vienna in 1485 and forced Frederick into prolonged exile. Styrian minting continued regardless, partly to fund the resistance.

CNA Fb 23 is among the scarcer Kreuzer attributions from this reign, with documented die variations across the series.
