Additional information

Issued to mark Prussia's crushing defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War, this Baden kreuzer was struck in the same year Wilhelm I was proclaimed German Emperor at Versailles — an event Baden's Grand Duke Frederick I had actively supported, making the victory deeply personal to the issuing state. Baden had aligned with Prussia early and contributed troops to the campaign.

Within months of this coin's issue, the kreuzer itself was obsolete — Imperial German currency reform eliminated the denomination entirely by 1873.
