Additional information

Issued to commemorate the consecration of the reconstructed Catholic parish church at Seckenheim in 1869, this piece belongs to a class of small-denomination Baden church-opening kreuzer struck in copper for local distribution — essentially liturgical souvenirs absorbed into pocket change. Frederick I of Baden was notably active in patronizing civic and religious building projects throughout his reign, and such consecration pieces were produced in modest quantities for distribution to attendees.

Jaeger's cataloguing under FH#92 keeps it firmly in the category of Gelegenheitsmünzen — occasion coins — rather than mainstream coinage.
