Obverse description Central crowned shield of arms bearing the Hessian lion rampant, the shield flanked on either side by foliate branches extending from base to crown. The composition is contained within a toothed or beaded border running along the coin's rim. The initials HD appear in the field, referencing the issuing authority of Hesse-Darmstadt. The overall design is rendered in a late 17th-century German heraldic style typical of small territorial coinage.
