Nassau's Adolphe ruled a duchy already living on borrowed time — the 1866 Austro-Prussian War ended with Prussia annexing Nassau outright, rendering this among the final copper issues of an independent Nassau mint. Adolphe himself survived the dynastic collapse, eventually inheriting the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in 1890 after the male Nassau-Orange line died out, making him the founding monarch of the current Luxembourg ruling house.
