Additional information

Frankfurt struck these kreuzers in the final years before Prussian annexation extinguished the city's seven-century run as a free imperial city. The Austro-Prussian War of 1866 ended it abruptly — Bismarck absorbed Frankfurt into Prussia that September, dissolved its municipal independence, and terminated all local coinage authority. Issues from 1866 are consequently scarce, the mint having been shut down mid-year before full production runs could be completed.
