The 1953 Czechoslovak monetary reform was one of the most punishing currency conversions in postwar Eastern Europe. Implemented on 1 June 1953, it replaced old crowns at a rate of 5:1 for small amounts and 50:1 for larger holdings — effectively wiping out savings accumulated during the preceding decade. The 1 Koruna was the lowest denomination of the new issue, and its enormous print run reflects the practical need to flood the economy with small notes quickly after old currency was invalidated.
The reform triggered workers' protests in Plzeň and other industrial cities — rare public unrest in a Stalinist state.
