Kutch occupied an awkward position in the early nineteenth century — nominally sovereign, practically subordinate. The 1819 treaty following British intervention against the Wagher pirates formalized Kutch's status as a protected state, which meant subsequent coinage issued under Muhammad Akbar Shah II's name was as much a political fiction as a functioning currency. The Mughal emperor's name appearing on a princely state's coinage was already an anachronism by 1837; Akbar II died that same year, rendering this issue an inadvertent memorial struck at the precise moment the convention it honored became entirely moot.
