Bharmalji II ruled Kutch from 1778 to 1814, the final years of his reign coinciding with the British East India Company's aggressive expansion into Kathiawar and the surrounding princely territories. The kori remained Kutch's native currency unit long after neighboring states had capitulated to Company monetary systems — a function of Kutch's geographic isolation on its peninsula and the pragmatic tolerance the Company extended to cooperative rulers. Bharmalji II died in the same year this issue was struck.
