Obverse description Central field occupied by a bold, stylized Arabic tughra-style inscription reading 'Sultan Mahmud' in large calligraphic script, rendered in the Ottoman manner with characteristic sweeping strokes and overlapping letterforms. The text fills the flan almost entirely, with no pictorial device. The coin is bordered by a beaded inner circle running along the rim, consistent with standard Tunisian billon coinage of the early nineteenth century. The overall style reflects the hammered production technique, imparting an irregular, slightly convex flan typical of this series.
