This issue falls within Tunisia's dual-sovereignty coinage period, when Ottoman suzerainty required the names of both the reigning Bey of Tunis and the Ottoman Sultan to appear together — a numismatic formality that reflected an increasingly hollow political relationship. By the early 1870s, French financial pressure on the Beylik was mounting steadily, and the regency would fall into French protectorate status within a decade of this coin's production.
KM#173 is a short-lived type, struck across just two regnal years before being superseded by revised issues under the same administration.
