Reverse description The reverse displays a three-line Kannada inscription arranged vertically in the central field, reading 'ಶ್ರೀ / ವಿ / ರ', an abbreviation for 'Sri Vira', referencing the dynastic title of the Madurai Nayaka rulers. The characters are rendered in a cursive Kannada script typical of the period, struck in low relief on the roughly finished hammered flan. The surface shows characteristic granularity and uneven die application consistent with hand-struck copper coinage of 17th–18th century South India.

Additional information

The Madurai Nayakas governed as nominally subordinate rulers under the Vijayanagara Empire before that empire's effective collapse after Talikota in 1565 left them operating as independent powers. The kasu was the workhorse denomination of South Indian petty commerce throughout this period — changing hands in temple markets, textile trades, and the agrarian economy of the Vaigai basin.

Attribution within the Nayaka series remains difficult. The 135-year span assigned to this type reflects genuine uncertainty about reign-specific die attribution rather than continuous uninterrupted production.
