The Central Bank of China was only formally established in 1924, the same year this note was issued, making it among the earliest emissions from that institution. It was founded under Sun Yat-sen's Nationalist government in Canton, not in Beijing, and its early notes competed directly with the currency of the rival Peking government's own central bank — two institutions simultaneously claiming the same name and national mandate.
ABNC printed the series from New York, a common arrangement for Chinese republican-era notes when domestic security printing capacity remained limited. The 1924 Canton issues are considerably scarcer than later Shanghai-period Central Bank notes.
