The Central Bank of China placed substantial orders with De La Rue in London throughout the 1940s, even as the Nationalist government's financial position deteriorated catastrophically. By 1946, China was already sliding into the hyperinflation that would ultimately destroy the fabi currency system — a 1 Jiao note was functionally worthless within months of issue, making sustained circulation unlikely.
De La Rue's involvement ended abruptly when the Nationalists retreated to Taiwan in 1949, shifting printing contracts to other suppliers.
