Issued sixty years after Victory Day, this coin was part of Ukraine's official commemoration of what Soviet and post-Soviet historiography calls the Great Patriotic War — the Eastern Front conflict that killed an estimated seven to eight million Ukrainian civilians and soldiers, a figure still debated by historians. Ukraine's participation in that war carried particular complexity: the country was occupied by German forces from 1941 to 1944, and its population found itself variously conscripted into the Red Army, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, or pressed into German auxiliary units.
