| Obverse description | Within a lozenge (rhombus) frame set against a plain field, the crowned Wittelsbach lozengy shield is displayed at center, with the date numerals split across the lower left and right quarters of the lozenge border — '17' to the left and '61' to the right. The lozenge corners touch the coin's circular border, creating a strong geometric composition characteristic of small Bavarian copper coinage of the period. |

Maximilian III Joseph inherited Bavaria in 1745 after his father's disastrous gamble on the imperial crown bankrupted the electorate and left it briefly occupied by Austrian forces. The heller denominations of his reign were struck primarily to address a chronic shortage of small change that had plagued Bavaria through the War of Austrian Succession — copper coinage being the only practical option for a treasury still clawing back solvency through the 1760s.
Wittelsbach copper from this period circulated hard and long, which makes clean survivors genuinely scarce.
