Reverse description A bold cross pattée divides the field into four quarters, with a small decorative floral or quatrefoil ornament at the center intersection. The letters A, Q, V, and S are distributed one in each quarter, forming the abbreviated legend AQVS, a contraction of MONETA NOVA AQUENSIS (New Coin of Aachen). The design is struck on an irregular flan typical of hammered coinage of this period, with no additional border or marginal legend.
